EASTERN RANGES - 8.8.56
DANDENONG STINGRAYS - 2.5.17
Despite having a week off after their opening victory against GWV Rebels, the Ranges girls lost none of their focus and intensity in an impressive performance against Dandenong.
In warm and windy conditions at the Healesville Sporting Complex on Saturday morning, Eastern finished the day 39-point winners and with two wins from as many matches.
With the coach’s instructions fresh in their minds, Eastern raced out of the blocks early in the first quarter, securing a 24-point lead at the first break.
Scoring became tougher as the match went on - Dandenong started to find their feet in the match, and the gusty conditions made hitting targets difficult as the flight of the ball became challenging to read.
At the main break, the margin was 31 points. Laura McClelland was prolific up forward with three goals, while Georgia Macpherson and Lauren Szigeti successfully repelled the Stingrays’ forward attempts.
It was slow going in the third quarter, with just the one goal for each team. Though attacking became more of a challenge after half time, Eastern’s defence were able to stand up and ensure that the three-quarter time margin would be too much for the Stingrays.
Dandenong tried to make a charge in the final quarter, but could only manage four behinds as fatigue and conditions turned the remainder of the contest into a back and forward between the arcs.
Some of the top performers on the day included Georgia Macpherson, Tarni Brown, Lauren Szigeti, Olivia Meagher, Laura McClelland, and Emerson Woods.
Goalkickers on the day were:
L McClelland 3
T Merrett 2
M Cann
S Kendall
O Meagher
Next round, the girls travel to Craigieburn to face the Oakleigh Chargers on Sunday (2:30PM) in what promises to be an intriguing contest.
