OAKLEIGH CHARGERS - 8.13.61
EASTERN RANGES - 1.5.11
The opening match of the season for Eastern’s U18 boys team proved to be a gruelling test in challenging conditions.
Torrential rain greeted the players on Saturday morning at Skybus Stadium, Frankston. The slippery conditions ensured that this would not be a slick, skilful display of fast-paced football - instead a slow, heavily contested arm wrestle for precious territory.
Oakleigh opened their goal account five minutes into the first quarter through Daniel Scala, and from there it seemed that the Chargers were quicker to adjust to the conditions.
The Ranges trailed by 19 points at quarter time, and 32 at half time. By the time the three-quarter time siren had sounded, Oakleigh led 6.12.48 to 0.3.3.
As a small consolation, Eastern did not finish the day goalless, with Jonte Duffy winning a free kick and slotting his chance five minutes into the final quarter.
The boys fought hard all the way until the final siren, going down by 50 points in the end. Some of the best players of the day included Ben Cardamone, Lachlan Stapleton, Billy McCormack, James Blanck, Fraser Smith, and Jonte Duffy.
Eastern’s next match is under Thursday night lights at RAMS Arena in Craigieburn, against the eighth-placed Calder Cannons.
