HAVE you been swept up in the excitement surrounding the launch of AFL Women’s and want to give football a try?
If so, Calder Cannons have an opportunity for you.
The club is hoping to unearth a few hidden gems from Melbourne’s north and west at our AFL Women’s Talent Search program on Wednesday, November 30.
To be eligible for the program, you need to have been born between 1998 and 2002, have had no experience playing AFL, not be registered with a local football club and live in Calder’s talent region.
Calder’s Youth Girls Academy Manager Pauline Leslie said she hoped the transition of several sportswomen from other sports to the AFL Women’s competition would encourage other athletes to try their luck.
She said examples such as former Riddell junior Kate Darby, who had not played football for 13 years but was drafted by Carlton, showed it was possible for women to quickly transition to the top level.
“That’s the thing, that’s what we want,” Leslie said.
“Those ones to come back.”
At the completion of the program, players who show skills and traits which suggest they can compete in Youth Girls competitions will be invited to take part in Calder’s Youth Girls Academy.
The academy is headed up by Alicia Eva, who has been involved with the Cannons in a coaching capacity since 2012 and was last month drafted to Collingwood in the AFL Women’s draft.
The trial is on Wednesday, November 30 from 6pm at Rams Arena, 229 Grand Blvd Craigieburn.
