Late in 1991, the Victorian State Football League was formed with regional teams participating in the TAC Cup, and a regional structure to deliver further development programs.
A twelve team Under 18 competition now operates as the AFL Victoria - TAC Cup Competition with seven metropolitan and five country teams. State teams representing Tasmania, ACT/NSW, Queensland and Northern Territory also play invitation matches during the season.
The North West Metro Region is represented by the Calder Cannons Football Club. The club training base is at RAMS Arena at Highgate Recreation Reserve, Craigieburn and players are `zoned' to the Cannons if they live in the municipal areas of Moreland, Melbourne, Hume, Moonee Valley, Macedon Ranges, Mitchell (part) & Brimbank (part).
The purpose of the club is to develop players to their ultimate potential and provide players with the opportunity to play at the highest level possible for their age, and to ultimately prepare some to play AFL football through the AFL National Draft. The competition is regarded Nationally as the major elite football development program for young players.
