The Northern Knights commitment to continual development doesn’t just apply on the football field. The club organised a seminar at Reservoir District
Secondary College
today to educate students about road safety and the consequences of ‘hoon’ activity on the roads.
The session was run by Leading Teams through their Athletes In Schools program and was hosted by current AFL players Leigh Brown (North Melbourne) and former Northern Knight Leigh Montagna (St.Kilda). Brown and Montagna spoke to the group of 40 students in the Knights VET Sport Football program about the negative consequences of taking risks as a driver and as a passenger.
The Knights were represented by Adam Woodhams and Vice Captain Hamish Paynter at the seminar, as well as brothers Sean and Dean Calcedo who are Knights Squad Members and students of RDSC.
The students were shown various TAC ads and asked to interpret the meanings behind them. The interactive session allowed the kids to ask and answer questions about the issues Brown and Montagna were discussing.
Paynter said he found the session very beneficial in introducing young drivers to the long term effects that youth road trauma can have on a community. “Leigh Brown gave a good personal account of youth road trauma affecting his community when he was growing up that really opens your eyes. The videos made you realise that you can really make a difference on the roads.”
Knights Region Manager Peter Kennedy emphasised the importance of the responsibilities TAC Cup clubs have in not only producing elite footballers, but in educating teenagers in the community to take responsibility on the road.
“The purpose of this session delivered by the Athletes In Schools program was a great opportunity to encourage students from Reservoir District
Secondary College
to recognise youth road trauma, become more responsible on the roads and to look out for their mates.
“I think today we achieved that goal of forging a link between football and the community, which is important as part of our involvement with the TAC’s L120 campaign.”
