It was a tough way to end a good season but the Jets season for 2019 is over. Gippsland proved too strong and the final score saw Power 11.9(75) defeat the Jets 6.4(40).
It was a finials experience early as Gippsland and Western battled it out at Ikon Park. Daly Andrews struck first blood after a roost from 55 metres out had the Jets up and about from the opening siren. William Kennedy was making his presence felt throwing his weight around the contest and competing well in the ruck.
Aaron Clarke was next to goal after the ball managed to bounce passed Power's defence. Andrews was busy early as the Jets smashed the clearances. Gippsland was rattled, but as soon as the rain entered the fray, Power kicked back a major before the first term ended.
The second quarter had Power threatening early, repeated inside 50's had the Jets defence under siege. Gippsland was taking risks and it paid off as they took the lead.
Almost bad news would follow as co-captain Lucas Rocci collided with a behind post in what looked like a car wreck. However, the skipper was lucky enough to avoid serious injury and continued the game. Josh Kellett was fantastic in defence but Gippsland kicked another major before halftime.
In the third term, the Jets were throwing their bodies into the contest lead by Rocci. The skipper was hungry for the ball but Gippsland was dictating the terms of play. Four unanswered goals by power had the Jets feeling flat. Western hadn't scored a goal for two-quarters of football as they head into the final quarter.
Things were grim for the Jets as Power had their foot on the gas and weren't letting up. Gippsland kicked the first goal of the term but a quick reply from Emerson Jeka saw a beautiful snap for goal.
Unfortunately, Gippsland hit back with another six points to add to their tally. Fortunately, the Jets earned a consolation prize with Andrews receiving a free-kick and 50-meter penalty that gave the Jets hero his second goal of the day. The game was beyond doubt but Archie Manton showed some fancy soccer skill to end the game with the Jets last goal of the season.
Hero of the day: Daly Andrews
Nobody from the Western front was more hungry for the ball than Andrews. From his long bomb goal to start the game to the sound of the last siren, he was outstanding. Andrews finished the game with 26 disposals, five inside-50s, and two majors.
